Rolex is a Swiss luxury watch manufacturer founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, England. The company later moved to Geneva, Switzerland, where it established its headquarters and where it continues to operate today.

Rolex was originally called "Wilsdorf and Davis" and specialized in importing and selling Swiss watch movements to other watchmakers, who would then put them in their own cases. In 1908, the company began producing its own watches under the "Rolex" brand name.

The name "Rolex" is believed to have been chosen because it was short, easy to pronounce in any language, and looked good on watch movements and dials. It has also been suggested that the name was inspired by the French phrase "horlogerie exquise," meaning "exquisite clockwork."

One of Rolex's first major accomplishments was the development of the first waterproof wristwatch, the Rolex Oyster, in 1926. This watch featured a hermetically sealed case that protected the movement from dust, moisture, and other elements. It was famously tested by Mercedes Gleitze, a young English swimmer who wore the watch during a swim across the English Channel in 1927.

Rolex continued to innovate throughout the 20th century, introducing several iconic watch models, including the Rolex Submariner, which was first introduced in 1953 as a diving watch with water resistance up to 100 meters. The Rolex GMT-Master, first introduced in 1955, was designed for pilots and featured a dual time zone function.

In addition to its technical innovations, Rolex also became known for its high-quality materials and attention to detail. The company began producing its own gold, and it is known for using only the highest quality materials in its watches, such as 904L steel and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

Today, Rolex is one of the most recognizable and respected luxury watch brands in the world, known for its iconic designs, technical innovations, and exceptional quality. Its watches are worn by everyone from explorers to celebrities and are considered a symbol of success and achievement
